Accessible homes

  • Access: The entrance and exit of the home is essential. It is recommended to install a ramp with a maximum slope of 6º and between 6 and 10 meters long. And above all, it has to be non-slip. Also, you can't miss a cylindrical railing that can help them to go up.
  • Doors: Doors must be at least 2 meters high and 0'80 meters wide so that the wheelchair can pass without difficulty and they should be easy to open.
  • Space: It's important that it's wide, avoiding, as far as possible, stairs, slopes and other obstacles that hinder mobility. The switches must be at the height of the affected person, that is about 0'80 or 0'90 meters. As for the cables, these should go through the walls, where they don't hinder the passage or generate a risk of interfering.
  • Bathroom: It's recommended to install a shower tray instead of a bath. This must have a non-slip surface, support bars and shower seat, so that the user can sit and hold safely. The area where the cup of the toilet is placed must be sufficiently wide to be able to place the chair next to it. There must also be support bars and must be sufficiently high to avoid unnecessary efforts. In the space beneath the sink, it's better not to put anything in place to put the chair there and make use of it.
  • Kitchen: Like all the rooms in the house, the kitchen has to be wide. The furniture should not have corners and must be arranged in the form of U or L because there is always a point to lean.
  • Bedroom: You must avoid carpets and leave enough space on the sides of the bed so that the wheelchair can circulate. The drawers must be at the right height and the closets must be easily accessible, without obstacles or unevenness.
  • Terrace: In case of having a terrace, it's essential that it be of non-slip materials. If there's a pool, you must have a specific wheelchair so that the person with reduced mobility can swim and have security measures, such as a lifeboat.

We hope that with these tips there is no obstacle or barrier for anyone!
