It can be a physical pot with cash deposited monthly by each roommate and spent according to the needs, or it can be an account in the bank where, in the same way, a monthly amount is charged for common expenses. In both cases, if all the money is not spent, you accumulate it for the following month, since there are always times when it's spent more money than in other ones.
