How to decorate your rental apartment or house

Decorating your rental house or apartment can be a challenge and a headache, especially if you want to do a renovation. We explain why you cannot renew your home if it includes a reform.
Tenants are not required to undertake repairs to a rental apartment, which is why they cannot make reforms in a house they do not own (except exceptions or agreements with the owner), nor can they make great decorative changes in the room. Unless there is a specific agreement with the owner in which there is fluid communication between both parties in addition to a written agreement, you cannot reform your home.

That is why we want to give you some keys and tips to decorate your rental house without making any reforms.
  • Hanging pictures without drilling holes in the wall: nowadays, it is very easy to hang a picture without the need for a drill to make holes. Whether you are taking advantage of a hole that was already made or having different tools such as checkerboard strips, nails, or adhesive tapes, new holes in the wall can be avoided. In any case, if there is no choice but to make new holes, always consult the owner of the house.
  • Carpets: the floor is worn by its use; usually the most worn are the areas of passage, such as corridors or receivers, which suffer more deterioration from dirt and moisture, among others. A practical and economical solution is to place carpets on the most worn parts, hiding the degraded ones.
  • Give the walls a coat of paint: dirt or moisture causes stains on the walls that are not attractive aesthetically. A hand of paint is an optimal solution. We recommend using soft colors, such as white, stone, or earth, to gain light and give a new look to the house. Even if you don’t want to paint, you could opt for some wallpaper prints, provided the owner agrees.
  • Vinyls: in case you can’t paint, either for money or laziness, you could try to paste beautiful vinyls where there are scratches, bumps, and other defects that you want to hide. We recommend that you use good-quality vinyl that can easily peel off once you leave the apartment, avoiding tearing the paint.
  • Put new knobs in the cabinets and general furniture: in the case of many flats or rental houses, you already have the furniture, which you cannot move or change. If this is your case, you can suggest the owner customize them. Changing the knobs on furniture and doors can give them a new touch and evoke new sensations. Even if you have the owner’s permission, maybe you can incorporate vinyl on the doors.
